Great Singapore Sale – shop till you drop

Arrived to our Singapore internet marketing company – eOneNet.com office in Midlink Plaza in the morning to collect my laptop and work for about 2 hours. I had a sumptuous breakfast of Singapore specialties like Kaya toast ( roti bakar ) – basically toasted bread with spread of butter and local jam, and French toast. I totally love bread and since young, I would opt more for bread than rice. However, I really did order too much, and because I disliked seeing food go to waste, I basically stuffed everything in, and as usual, hope that this will not show in my weight.

The Great Singapore Sale (GSS) is back again and I’ve not managed to squeeze it a whole day of shopping in my earlier trips. Staying at the Meritus Mandarin, just next to Ngee Ann City Shopping Centre on Orchard Road is one of the greatest benefits.

Singapore has lots of items on offers, including good bargains on luxury goods, and you can get all the best brands along Orchard Road – Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Fendi, Dior. I guess I’m a pretty diverse shopper, I love the main fashion brands, but on the other end, I still find cheap bargain items, pretty irresistible. I just shop with a mindset that if I like it, then it doesn’t really matter that it’s not a luxury brand.

Headed to Coach but I remembered buying 3 new bags there in 1 go about two months ago, and I’ve not even used those bags yet. Probably I should check out something different this round. I decided to shop for watches.

I went into The Hour Glass, one of the most popular watch store in Asia. I’ve not had a rolex before, so I decided maybe I should treat myself to one. Surprising it took me only 5 minutes to decide on the ladies Rolex watch model I wanted, and typically, you can get about 15% discount on this brand off the retail price. If I were to purchase the same watch back home in Malaysia, I could use those interest free installments schemes offered by credit card companies, but then, I decided to just settle the bill in cash as you’ll probably get a less favourable rate after the bank exchange rate takes place. Singapore has a thousand dollar currency note, so I only needed to count 10 bills and pay for the watch.

Before heading home, do remember to collect your GST refund from the airport so that you can get a refund on the taxes on items that you have purchased. It works out to around 4.5% of your total bill, so looks like an extra S$400 there already in cash.
