Delays in Hong Kong Airport & Chaos for Air Travellers
Today’s my flight back to Singapore from Hong Kong. Yesterday, it was a Typhoon 3 Signal in HK and most of the flights on August 3, were cancelled, with thousands of flight passengers being stranded in the airport for hours.
I checked in at 6pm for my 8pm flight on Cathay Pacific at the Kowloon Station check in counter, which is just downstairs at my apartment in The Arch. Then I took the airport express train which brought me to the airport in just 23 minutes. It’s the most crowded airport train ride I’ve been on.
Normally when you check in, you will already have the boarding gate given but this was a unique situation. I waited patiently at the airport and even at 8pm (which was the time that my flight was supposed to be departing), the airport flight departure board was still not showing any gate.
Restaurants were packed, people were sitting on the carpets, and using their creative minds on how to spend their time. For me, I just spent time in the bookstore, reading new Marketing Ideas books like the eBay Millionaire book that had interviews of
several wonderful powersellers and their success stories of making money from eBay.
Finally by 8.20, the gate appeared – Gate no. 12, and I decided to continue reading for about 15 mintues more before heading there. To my surprise, although some of the passengers were already queeing up at this Gate for their Singapore flight, no Cathay Pacific staff was on hand.
There was a poor lad from another airline company currently at the Departure Gate and patiently, he had to answer questions from furious customers although it was not even his role (since he was from a rival company). I think it’s ridiculous to announce the gate and not even have a Cathay Pacific officer on standby.
So here I am writing my blog posting for the day.
There were actually alternative airlines for Hong Kong to Singapore route, but then, I’ve always preferred Cathay, and was even a Club Member. JetStar Asia, the budget airline and Singapore Airlines had nicely arranged flights today, but Cathay proved to be very disorganized.
Finally my 8pm flight successfully took off at about 10.45pm. Arrived in Singapore at about 2am and checked in to the Meritus Mandarin Hotel.
