Summer Palace Beijing, China
The Summer Palace (Yiheyuan) is one of the travel spots in Beijing, China. The minute i walked in, i was surprised by the huge lake. You can walk around the entire lake, or take a short cut like me, by using the Dragon Boat.
The Summer Palace is the largest royal park, and is ranked amongst the most was listed as one of the World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 1998.
I was not a big fan of historical sites, but looking at the site, does creates a different experience. Being able to view the ways that previous royals have lived centuries ago, and walking through the same paths, i do have to say that yes, this was rather impressive.
The Summer Palace was a favourite palace for Empress Dowager Cixi, which would have over 128 dishes cooked for each of her meals. Being one of the most well-known lady figures in the China history, the Summer Palace is definitely a site that you want to visit when you drop by in Beijing.
The site is filled with tourists from all around the world, and many of them, were even local Chinese from other provinces, all listening attentively as the tour guide introduced the different part of this amazing palace.
Be extra careful of peddlers that might approach you with goods, ranging from puppets to Beijing 2008 merchandise. I was holding on to a bottle of green tea, and had a man following me for over 10 minutes, just eager to grab the empty bottle that i was going to dispose. I finally gave up, and handed him the half-full bottle.
In many palaces, you are bound to find lion-like figurines at the front of the buildings and doors. I later found out that they normally come in a pair. Look carefully from the 2 pictures below and can you see which is the male and which is the female?
