Tips when choosing your laptop in Singapore
I purchased my Sony Vaio Laptop - T37 in Singapore in 2005 at about S$3,700. It’s lightweight and very suitable for people who are constantly on the move. However, of course with the small size, the specifications too are not that extensive. One thing for sure, it looks cool on most photo shoots, like this recent The Star article at http://www.eonenet.com/press/120906_sell_online.htm
Great and loud audio, plus comes with the slots for memory sticks (good for people using Sony cameras) but if you are using MS Pro-Duo, then you will need an extra adapter to just slot into before plugging into the point in your Sony Laptop.
When choosing your laptop, you can never be over trusting. I purchased my first Sony laptop at an electronics chain store in Raffles City, and then informed the staff that i’ll be back to collect at the end of the day, after i finished my internet marketing seminar in the evening.
That night, i went back to my hotel room and realised that the laptop was rather dusty, but it never crossed my mine that anything could be wrong as :-
1. i saw the sales person open a brand new one out of the box
2. it was a huge retail chain store
Upon reaching home, i showed my brand new purchase to my brother and upon inspecting the unit, he told me this was probably a Display Model. Yes, i was furious, and i wrote in to the Company. They admitted that they had given me a display model and they could just give me a refund. To cut the story short, i was not even reimbursed for my travel back to their Raffles City and i couldn’t return the laptop in their Malaysia outlet in Ikano Power Centre. At first, you might have thought that it was just the unethical sales person’s fault, but since i got the reply directly from their Singapore GM, it seems that he didn’t even do anything to suspend the staff. I wonder what would their Australia Headquarters reactions be, when they discover that such incidents have occured?
I never purchased anymore items from that Company, and happily moved my purchases to Challenger in Funan IT Mall. From the last check on my account, i’ve spent over S$17,000 with them since middle 2005.
Therefore, i learnt a hard lesson, and nowadays, i instantly collect the electronics i purchased, just to avoid similar experiences.

Hi.
I am due to be in Singapour in early October and would like some advice from savvy locals, please.
1 - Are the prices there on laptops much better than Europe?
2 - Where should I go to buy and where not! I only have a few days available for this purpose, remember.
Thanks!

Hi Phil,
You can check out the Funan IT Mall, located near the Raffles City Shopping Centre and the nearest MRT station is the City Hall station. You can easily walk over in just 10 minutes.
There are many small IT shops there, and the one i normally use is the biggest retailer there called Challenger. Ranging from Digital cameras up to LCD projectors, they are well equipped.
Here are some tips:-
- check with retailer whether you can get GST refund on the purchases you made (this is the tax imposed by the Singapore government which was at 5% earlier but raised to 7% recently i think)
- the brand that you purchase, check for the warranty as in whether it is just for local warranty or for international warranty?
- if you need to upgrade the specs, like RAM, etc, you can directly inform them and they can do this for you too
Since i have had a “bad” experience when i dealt with another Singapore electronics big retailer in the past, i am now more wary and insist on being there when they open up the box & install the softwares etc
SO far with my experience with Challenger store, i’ve been pleased and i would be unlikely to purchase from another retailer.
Happy Shopping!
Rgds, Fione
