I won't recommend hiding the entire site from the public as the website will be a good tool to entice the visitors to join you as a member later on. It's either that you want to do a general password , id for all your members or individual id, passwords for each single member. - this will involve doing up a database in either mysql, or mssql, etc so you should discuss with your web programmer on your requirements.
