Hong Kong food - local cuisines you shouldn’t miss

Hong Kong food - local cuisines you shouldn't missIf it’s the first time you’re in Hong Kong, you would definitely won’t want to miss out the local cuisine. First thing you need to try is the local hong kong coffee shops (cha chan teng).

You can just walk-in to any of the local coffee shops during breakfast timing (starts from as early as 7am to up to 10.30am), and order their breakfast sets for about HK$20. This is normally inclusive of one hot drink (coffee, milk tea, lemon tea, ovaltine, horlicks, almond milk), and your main course. You can even ask for “yin yong”, which is a mixture of coffee and tea.

I’ll recommend macaroni in soup like this below, that normally comes with scrambled or fried eggs plus toast with butter.

Hong Kong food - local cuisines you shouldn't missFor those that watch many hong kong movies, you’ll hear of bo lo pau (pineapple bun). In the coffee shops, yo can ask for bo lo yau (pineapple bun with 1 chunk of butter)

- you don’t spread the butter to the bun, but instead, you will place the whole slice of butter in the middle of the bun and eat it while it’s hot.

- there’s no pineapple involved though…

Do take note that not all regular coffee shops have English menu, so some restaurants like Tsui Wah restaurant / chain of coffee shops would have this in english too. Expect to be in a crowded coffee shop, small spaces, and lots of noise around… all part and parcel of being in a coffee shop in Hong Kong.
