China internet growth and statistics

Before you start to sell to over 120 million China internet users, you should know what target market to focus on.

China, being the largest internet population in Asia, and this number is still growing year by year. Here I’ll share with you on a recent study by the China Internet Network Information Center in June 2006.

In the 123 million China internet users, 77% are using broadband, while 47.5% are using dial-up, and leased lines take up 26.8% (yes, the numbers do not tally 100% as Internet users that are using multiple internet access methods are recounted in each type).

Chinese male users account for 58.8% while 41.2% of the internet users are female. The majority of internet users are between the age of 18-24 (38.9%), while followed by thoe aged 25-30 (18.4%). Between the 2 extremes, there were 14.9% represented by those aged below 18, while only 0.8% are above the age of 60.

More singles are going online (55.1%) compared to married internet users at 44.9%. Each week, on average the internet user in China is spending 16.5 hours online. Popular activities online include reading news, using search engines, accessing the email and participating in community bulletin boards and forums.

Although the love being online, there were several issues that the internet users were unhappy about, including popup advertisements / windows (this was the main item that internet users hated most), fear of hackers attack, including Trojan programs, internet viruses, and the credibility issue of online information (for instance, they are worried whether the contents on the website are fake information?), and more.

I guess in a way, most of us, internet users also hate the same problems, don’t you?
