Youtube - Viral Internet marketing worth US$1.6 billion
”There is no more big making money opportunities on the Internet.” How often have we heard about this (or thought about this)? Google’s purchase of Youtube for US$1.6 billion proves us wrong, once again.
The Youtube phenomenon is another example of viral marketing, i.e word of mouth marketing using the medium of the Internet, following the examples of hotmail, ICQ, Skype which were sold from $400 million to billions of dollars.
What’s the one thing in common among all of them?
They all provide free tools for users to communicate with each other. Hotmail provides free emails, ICQ free instant online chat, Skype free instant online chat plus free IDD calls via the Internet (which we are using to communicate with our team in offices in different countries.
Youtube enables users to upload and share videos with others. Its popularity is due to the exponential increase in broadband users. For example, in Hong Kong, nearly everyone is on broadband, which is faster and much cheaper. I am paying only about HK$180 per month, including unlimited internet access plus some digital TVs channels here in Hong Kong.
Another factor of Youtube’s popularity is the common use of digital cameras and mobile phones with video capture features. This enables us to capture any video footage instantly and upload to the Internet. A recent successful example is the infamous ”bus uncle” who scolded a guy inside a bus. The scolding video was captured by a mobile phone and uploaded to Youtube. The next is history. This video was viewed by over 100,000 people and this “bus uncle” was featured in all major newspapers and magazines. Suddenly, everyone in Hong Kong were talking about this uncle.
