High Internet penetration but low online purchase rate in Hong Kong

Posted by Harrace (Hong Kong)

Hong Kong people love going online with 60.5% of Internet penetration but only 8.8% of the population shopped online in 2006, according to the Hong Kong SAR Government Census & Statistics Department.

From May to August, 2006, the Statistics Department reported that 70.1% of the population in Hong Kong (1.6 million) possess computers at home, and 93.6% of which are already online.

60.5% representing about 3.7 million people have gone online. However, being a shopping haven, online purchase is still not popular in Hong Kong, with a mere 8.8% of people have made an online purchase in 2006 (about 490,000).

From our survey for the participants who have attended eOneNet’s seminars in Hong Kong, 75% paid online.

Regarding businesses, it’s surprising that only a mere 18% have got websites. It looks like Hong Kong is lagging behind 2 to 3 years in Internet marketing behind Malaysia and Singapore. So eOneNet is well poised to pentrate the market in Hong Kong, with its leading Internet marketing brand and regional support team in Asia.

One Response to “High Internet penetration but low online purchase rate in Hong Kong”

  1. Amy L Says:

Based on observation, I get lots of feedback from customers of their fear of exposing their credit card details for online purchases. No wonder, it’s unpopular in HK. Bare in mind they have no ideas that bank offers various insurance services to protect customers but still customer would like to prevent by ignoring purchasing online. But again, those 8.8% people who shop online, shop at EBay the most popular bid website.

Although the hectic lifestyle, it wouldn’t hinder the Hong Kong people’s spirit to go out on a congested weekend to shop. But in the US, people like to sit comfort at home and enjoy internet shopping. No fuss of parking, queuing up at the cashier, more options and stress free!
