Yumiko T-back video and Internet marketing

Posted by Harrace, Senior Internet marketing coach

What has Yumiko Cheng Hei Yi, a Hong Kong not-so-famous singer, got to do with Internet marketing? Owing to wardrobe malfunction during a live charity show in Hong Kong, her pants were stripped off exposing her t-back, and within 24 hours, a search in yahoo.com.hk for “Yumiko t-back” produced 2,420 results, whereas a search for “Yumiko 甩褲” (Yumiko pants off or Yumiko jeans off) produced a whopping 9,760 search results! I’ve done some searches and managed to see the Yumiko video and photos.

As at the time of writing, this Yumiko T-back video was uploaded to YouTube for 3 times and was viewed for more than 5,000 times within 24 hours!

This is the replica of Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction. This incident has created unprecedented global attention, and resulted in Janet Jackson being the top search keyword in search engines in 2004. This term has also found its place into the leading online encyclopedia, Wikipedia, which it defines wardrobe malfunction as

used to describe the accidental exposure of an intimate part or parts of the body due to a defect in an article or articles of clothing. Most famously, it was used by Justin Timberlake to explain the Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show controversy, a 1 February 2004 incident in which the malfunction resulted in what was claimed to be the unintentional baring of most of Janet Jackon’s right breast”.

There was controversy as to whether this was planned as an intentional publicity stunt, or accidental. If this was a publicity stunt, Janet Jackson has tremendous success in regaining fame for more than one year after the incident.

This is the power of the Internet, and Internet marketing!

Similarly, we can expect more searches to be done on Yumiko related keywords and her video online and she will probably benefit in gaining her popularity for 2007. Compared to a model doing a bikini show, Yumiko has much more to gain from this incident. She appears to have recovered as she appeared in public for a promotional event merely after one day.

So do you think this incident is an intentional publicity stunt or merely an accident?
