Mobile broadband in Malaysia : Digi GPRS vs Celcom 3G?

Has anyone signed up for the mobile broadband services in Malaysia? Well, i’m personally using 2 services right now. Here are the reviews of the services, and my experience so far.

1. Digi GPRS services

- for RM99 a month, you can have unlimited broadband surfing for your laptop. For this one, we needed to buy the Sony Ericsson GPRS card for about RM900 (special price if you open up a new Postpaid mobile phone line)

- supplementary Data card (meaning that sim card cannot be used for making phone calls) with same unlimited broadband is at RM33 per month

- the experience has been the best so far, as whether i am using this in hotels all across Malaysia, or in my office in Damansara Perdana, the internet connection is stable.

- i was at Low Yat Plaza yesterday, and they had a promotion where for new subscribers to this service can even get a HP laptop with free 1 year worth of unlimited GPRS broadband services for the price of about RM3,400! I signed up again for this service and you can get an option for a free HP mobile phone with inbuilt 1.3 megapixel camera or the GPRS usb modem to slot your SIM card in. I choose the option with the additional free GPRS modem as i’ve got way too many phones already! This offer is for a new line only so i’ll have to terminate my existing data services on one of my Digi phone line. The laptop will be added in as one of the brand new laptops for our computer lab training classes.

2. Celcom 3G broadband data

- This is at RM99 per month for unlimited usage too, but you will not be able to have a supplementary special offer like what Digi offers. They had an offer when i signed up about 2 weeks ago for buy a Huawei 3G modem card at RM999 and get 1 year of broadband usage for Free so i bought this package. If you are already using Streamyx services at home, then you can get a special RM88 price per month for this additional mobile broadband service.

- Supposedly 3G (or some even calls it 3.5G, will be faster than GPRS) but my experience proved otherwise. In my PJ office, the connection is ok. However when i use this service in my new apartment in Dsara Perdana, in many instances, the connection will automatically terminate every 5 or 10 minutes so that was horrible! The only good thing about this service was that the Huawei modem can be installed on our Fujitsu laptop (of which the Digi’s Sony Ericsson modem cannot be installed!).

If you decide to surf without the GPRS or 3G modem, then you can use the BlueTooth on your mobile phone to connect to the Bluetooth function on your laptop (so your mobile phone will act as the modem) but this method does not guarantee a stable internet connection, plus the speed is slower than the direct plug in modem.

I’ve not tried the Maxis mobile broadband services yet but realised my current maxis mobile phone services seem to be giving me lots of “disconnected” calls these recent weeks so i was wondering whether it’s mobile broadband internet services would be having any such problems too…
