How to choose the top affiliate programs?

One of my coaching participants, brought up these questions about how to choose the best top 10 affiliate programs, and how to actually join the best affiliate programs with the highest payouts.
Here are the questions that were posted about the free affiliate programs and the answer from Internet marketing coach:-
1. What would be the main criterias to look for in choosing an affiliate program besides considering commission payable vs price?
You can compare between 2 or 3 different affiliate program merchants
- the commission who is higher
- one off commission on referred sale or including future sales from this customer
- is it single tier or multi tier (what if you recruit affiliates too, do you get paid/override their commission)
- which site has a competitive pricing
- range of services & products (local vs international coverage of delivery)?
- the overall website design, which has more ease of navigation
At the end of the day, it’s about you recommending a website that sells quality products and services that appeal to your website visitors. If you find that you dislike the website design and feel that the products offered are not attractive, it’s likely that your prospects, visitors also feel the same.
2. What if the merchant site / owner of this affiliate program was not able to process / deliver my orders when the item that my customers selected is out of stock?
In the sense of affiliate programs, those merchants should have a variety of stocks. If the supplies of a particular model is no longer there, then they would display that on the site, and if your customers ordered goods that were not in stock, the merchant would offer alternative choices (eg different colour, model) for the customer to consider
3. How to tell if a merchant is reliable or not?
You can view their website, whether there are any contact addresses. If the website is a reputable website like Amazon or Dell, then you can trust their official sites.
Moreover, if they are registered with having affiliate networks / affiliate managers like cj, or linkshare, to manage their affiliate programs, then those merchants are more likely to be credible
- to join these big affiliate networks like the 2 mentioned above, the website would have paid a few thousand US dollars just to become a merchant in that network. Therefore, you can be assured that the merchants would be using the top range affiliate program management tracking engines to monitor the referred sales from banners and text links, plus offer online updated affiliate commission monitoring
- the affiliate managers would have held deposits from those merchants (to be used for paying affiliates, resellers) so you are more likely to protect your commission earnings.
