Customer reorders on Affiliate program website

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

One of the main concerns about making money online with Affiliate Program is what happens when your referred Customer decides to makes a second order.

At that point, your Customer already knows of the Merchant website and will go direct to that merchant site without visiting your website or blog link?

Therefore, you need to read the payout plan of the Affiliate Program that you have joined to be aware of which program will actually yield you more income. That is why when you choose affiliate program, you should find those that are having commission on return sales / repeated orders too (to protect your efforts)

During the first time your customers buy, they are already on that merchant’s website to complete their transaction and remit payment.  Therefore when the customer decides to make a second purchase, or even if in some cases of customer renewing their online membership the second month, this customer do not need to click on to your affiliate link before reaching the merchant’s website.

You will also find some merchants that even offer lifetime commissions on reorders (but this is only tracked mostly based on client’s email so if client use NEW email to purchase, then you will not earn anymore commission).

By properly choosing the affiliate programs to join, you will definitely get to earn multiple sources of income for your website business too.

Affiliate Program : First tier payout vs Second tier payout

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Posted by Fione Tan, head Internet Marketing Coach

Affiliate program allows you to recommend other people’s products and then make an income from their activity / response on that website (such as making a purchase or joining as member)

One of my internet marketing coaching students recently asked me this affiliate program question:-

In some affiliate programs, they’ve indicated a first tier payout and a second tier payout of different percentages. What are first tier payout and second tier payout?

My answer was:-

You are the affiliate and then recommend me & Harrace to visit website B (means MERCHANT).

When i go & visit website B, i also join the affiliate program so i become an AFFILIATE too.
- then you will earn 2nd tier payout (% of how much commission i am earning)

When Harrace goes & visit website B, he immediately buys something so he becomes a customer
- then you will earn 1st tier payout (commission on his amount of purchase)

Therefore, it’s best to join an affiliate program that can offer you at least a two-tier affiliate program so that you will earn more income.

Common terms about Affiliate Programs

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

Posted by Fione Tan, head internet marketing coach

During my coaching discussion with one of my DVD internet marketing home study coaching student, she raised these common questions that you too, might also face when intending to join affiliate programs.

1. What is the meaning of pay per sale and pay per lead?

Pay per sale means you refer sale fo US$100 & if commission is 15% then you earn US$15. Pay per lead is more popular for B2B or the sales cycle that are longer (eg require many follow up etc). Pay per lead eg can be US$2 per form filled or the US$3 per free member recruited

2. What is the meaning of cookies?

Cookie means they track when the customer you refer came back & make the first purchase. You refer Mary but she clicked & didn’t buy today, but came back 3 weeks later so you will still get paid. 1 year means if user come back within 1 year from the day she clicked.

- cookie is a code that is installed into the client’s pc when they visited the merchant’s site. So if user use another pc or clicked on another resellers link or formatted the pc, then the cookie won’t matter anymore

3. What is the meaning of 2 tier affiliate program?

2 tier means if you get a client who buy , then you get the commission. If the person you refer didn’t buy BUT joined the affiliate program then you will also get to override on this affiliate’s sale. This means that whether you refer a sale and refer another affiliate (reseller), you can get to earn the direct commission on sales, or to earn the over-riding commission on what your other referred affiliates are making.

Basically, it is free to join affiliate program, if you are an affiliate but if you want to start this affiliate program & become a merchant then you need to pay.

Do you need a website before joining free affiliate programs?

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

Posted by Fione Tan, head internet marketing coach

Here are some common questions posed by entrepreneurs when they want to join the free affiliate programs

1. I found an affiliate site but in order to use their banners, I need to have a website first. As my website is still not up yet, how am i supposed to get contents for my website?
- do I copy from the existing site or must I build up my own contents and banners?
- what is the procedure for me to get the contents onto my site so that I can sign up with the affiliate program merchant for approval?

Here is the answer from internet marketing coach:-

Here are the steps to get started when joining the affiliate program:-
- list out the affiliate programs that you intend to join (eg about 10 free affiliate programs and their payout rates)

- do not copy articles, contents from other people’s websites unless they have given you permission to do so (and even if they let you use their articles, you should also check what is the benefit to them eg do you need to link to them, mention in source?)

- to plan your own website structure for inserting contents in, eg if you are doing a website about atkins diet so you will be having pages like what is atkins diet, free atkins diet menu plan, popular atkins diet stories, and more

- you should have about 5 webpages of contents and make sure there are no pages that shows under construction, or coming soon

- then you use your website name or blog url to apply for the free affiliate programs

How to choose the top affiliate programs?

Tuesday, August 7th, 2007

Posted by Fione Tan, head internet marketing coach

One of my coaching participants, brought up these questions about how to choose the best top 10 affiliate programs, and how to actually join the best affiliate programs with the highest payouts.

Here are the questions that were posted about the free affiliate programs and the answer from Internet marketing coach:-

1. What would be the main criterias to look for in choosing an affiliate program besides considering commission payable vs price?

You can compare between 2 or 3 different affiliate program merchants
- the commission who is higher
- one off commission on referred sale or including future sales from this customer
- is it single tier or multi tier (what if you recruit affiliates too, do you get paid/override their commission)
- which site has a competitive pricing
- range of services & products (local vs international coverage of delivery)?
- the overall website design, which has more ease of navigation

At the end of the day, it’s about you recommending a website that sells quality products and services that appeal to your website visitors. If you find that you dislike the website design and feel that the products offered are not attractive, it’s likely that your prospects, visitors also feel the same.

2. What if the merchant site / owner of this affiliate program was not able to process / deliver my orders when the item that my customers selected is out of stock?

Should you promote affiliate programs similar to your own products?

Monday, May 28th, 2007

Affiliate Program tips by Fione Tan, Head Internet Marketing Coach.

During one of my private Internet Marketing coaching sessions, there was a question about whether we should join Competitors’ affiliate programs and if yes, how to choose.

First, decide what are your products’ strengths / advantages compared to your competitors products? Here are some tips on how to join the best affiliate programs of merchants selling similar products.

1. Check the commission payout.

- is it for 1 time sale only or also includes commission on your customers’ future purchases?

- do you get paid based on multi-tier affiliate program? Meaning if your customers become an affiliate and use their own affiliate links to complete the purchase, do you get any benefits too?

2. Choose complementary products / range

- if let’s say you sell ladies crystal watches only so you can join other affiliate programs that sells sporty watches, or other branded watches like Rolex, or Piaget since you do not carry these similar brands.

- also look at what other items / products that your customers might need. If you sell silver jewelry, then maybe you can join other affiliate programs that are selling jewelry boxes, or jewelry care such as silver jewelry polisher.

- if you sell only to Asian markets, then you can look for an affiliate program that can cover the rest of the world, so that your customers can also purchase & send to USA, or Europe.

3. Place the affiliate banners in the proper locations on your site

- if the affiliate programs are meant to be your side income (one website can have multiple sources of income), then you should avoid placing competitors’ affiliate programs banners or text links on your own order page, or sales pages.

- insert on other informational pages, eg articles, frequently asked questions, etc

- you can even choose to feature a specific affiliate program product or link directly to the product page of your recommended product. Sample of linking to a specific product page can be viewed on this blog posting :-

This means that those affiliate programs that you join can appear not only in your website, but also in your other blogs.

At the end of the day, you can always sell or recommend a Book about this product from Amazon’s affiliate program. No matter whether you are selling a diet pill or an online stocks trading software, there are surely some books and ebooks written on the market. Therefore when you recommend books from Amazon itself, then you can also earn some commissions from the order.

When is a good time to apply for Google Adsense?

Tuesday, April 10th, 2007

Google adsense is whereby you can put in Google advertisers on your own webpages and when your website visitor clicks on such advertisements, you will then earn money from Google. Can you really make money on Google adsense? I’ve seen many successful cases of entrepreneurs earning thousands of dollars each month using this method alone. The key is to fully understand how this works, and then study the statistics that are derived from the Adsense area.

One of my internet marketing coaching students recently asked me this question, when should i apply for Google Adsense?

First, the details about this program as listed at www.google.com/adsense so you can read more about this money making program before you join it.

Before applying, you should think of these points:-

a) What website are you using to apply? That domain name / website should already have a few contents pages and no under construction webpages.

- if you are using a BLOG to apply then the best choice is to use your Blogger account (Google’s blog website will display your blogs as id.blogspot.com such as http://1discountshopping.blogspot.com )

- contents on your website do not mean that you just cut and paste some images there, or add in a full list of affiliate programs but to really write useful tips / contents related to the topic of your website.

Displaying affiliate links vs cloaking links

Monday, October 30th, 2006

When a person joins an affiliate program, their banners and text links will normally display their ids as part of the website url. For instance, www.eonenet.com/id=123 if my affiliate id was 123.
