How to register your marriage in Malaysia if you got married abroad
I’ve just collected my Malaysia Marriage Registration Certificate today from WanChai, Hong Kong. I had my wedding in Hong Kong on March 4th, 2007 and this was registered in Hong Kong, and my HK marriage certificate was all i had so far.
Malaysia marriage registration certificates comes in 2 versions, one copy for the Male (blue), and another for the Female (pink). Earlier on, my husband asked me what language was stated on the certificate and I cheerfully said English. However on second checking i realised that the items were in Malay, but the details of my Hong Kong address at The Arch was in English (so Harrace was holding on to the certificates and didn’t understand anything beyond our names, and address).
Since i was Malaysian, i also needed to register my overseas marriage with the Malaysian government as well. Normally, when a couple gets married in Malaysia, they will visit the “Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara” / National Registration Department of Malaysia to register their marriage.
I checked around, and realised that most couples in KL would opt to register at the Tin Hau Temple. For full information on how to register your marriage (when one of the spouses is a Malaysian), then you can visit this official government website at http://www.gov.my/MyGov/BI/Directory/Citizen/Family/Marriage/
There are basically registration for Muslim or non-Muslim marriages.
For overseas held marriages, this should be registered back within 6 months, otherwise a penalty will be imposed. For me, i choose to register my Hong Kong marriage with the Malaysian Embassy, which in this case was the Consulate Geneneral of Malaysia in Hong Kong. You need to fill up the form there, and bring along your Hong Kong marriage certificates and copies of all documents such as Malaysian Identity Card, Passports of both parties (bring the original copies as this has to be verified by the Officer compared to your submitted photocopy versions.) Total fees to be paid is HK$42 only.
It’s located on the 24th Floor of the Malaysian Building (same building as where the Matrade HK office is at), and it’s just across the road from the Wan Chai Revenue Tower. The nearest MRT station will be Wan Chai (use the exit for Hong Kong Exhibition Center).
Walking along the pedestrian covered bridge towards the Revenue Tower, you will notice a Delifrance below one of the staircase on your right. Go down the stairs, and walk straight and when you see the Jaguar car showroom, or the Tourism Malaysia signage on the building, it means you’ve reached the Malaysian building. It’s just about 5 minutes walk from the MRT station.
One thing you’ll agree for sure, is that you’ll get this done very fast because there are no queues like the those in the regular government departments back home in Malaysia.
Here is the address of the Consulate General of Malaysia in Hong Kong
24 Floor, Malaysia Building,
47-50 Gloucester Road,
Wanchai, Hong Kong SAR
Telephone no. : (852) 28210800
Just contact the local Embassy or Consulate in your city to check on how you can register your overseas marriage.

Rgds Fione
Hi Fione
Tks very much for the useful info. I’m very excited to find your blog just now while I’m searching for the info on marriage registration with my fiance who is a Malaysian. My case is a little different.
My fiance (Malaysian) and I (as HK Citizen)are marrying this Nov. My fiance and I both work in HK, but he would like to do the marriage signing ceremony back in his hometown in Penang if possible. So, from your email, does it mean we can need to do the registration first at least 6 mths in advance and can this be done at the Malyasia Consulate in HK while the signing ceremony be done in Penang?
Glad to hear from you soon.
Carol
Hi Carol,
You should register in the Msia Consultate in HK if you signed your marriage certificate in Hong Kong. If you have signed that certificate in Penang, then you would probably need to register this marriage certificate with the Hong Kong deparment in order to have this overseas document recognised by the local authority in HK.
In Malaysia, you can check out the official government website listed above.
Cheers, Fione
Hi Fione,
We are very similar - I am from HK and my fiance is from Malaysia and thanks for the helpful information about the registration.
I am having a lot of trouble in finding a make-up artist in KL (as it is in a month’s time…) and a lot of people have been booked.
Anyone good to recommend? Any urgent rescue will be much appreciated! Have a great 2010!
